Cookies

We use cookies on our websites. This information gives you an overview of what cookies are, which types of cookies we use, what data we process through cookies, and for what purposes we do so.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small files that allow specific, device-related information to be stored on your access device (PC, smartphone, etc.). They serve, on the one hand, to make websites more user-friendly and convenient for users (e.g., storing login data). On the other hand, they help collect statistical data on website usage so it can be analyzed for the purpose of improving our services. You can influence the use of cookies. Most browsers offer an option to restrict or completely prevent the storage of cookies. However, please note that using our websites—and especially the convenience of use—may be limited without cookies.

What types of cookies do we use?

Transient cookies are automatically deleted when you close the browser. These include, in particular, session cookies. They store what is known as a session ID, which allows various requests from your browser to be assigned to a common session. This enables your device to be recognized when you return to the website. Session cookies are deleted when you log out or close the browser.

Persistent cookies are automatically deleted after a specified period, which can vary depending on the cookie. You can delete these cookies at any time in your browser’s security settings.

You can configure your browser settings according to your preferences and, for example, refuse to accept third-party cookies or all cookies. However, please note that you may then not be able to use all features of this website.

Flash cookies used are not recorded by your browser but by your Flash plug-in. They store the necessary data independently of the browser you use and do not have an automatic expiration date. If you do not want Flash cookies to be processed, you must install an appropriate add-on, such as “Better Privacy” for Mozilla Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/betterprivacy/) or Adobe Flash-Killer-Cookie for Google Chrome.

Some of our services also use so-called tracking or web bugs, also known as tracking pixels. These are code snippets that typically measure only 1×1 pixels and can identify your browser type via the browser ID—the individual fingerprint of your browser. This allows the service provider to see when and how many users accessed the pixel, or whether and when an email was opened or a website was visited.

To block web bugs on our websites, you can use tools such as Webwasher, Bugnosis, or AdBlock. To block web bugs in our newsletter, please configure your email program so that no HTML is displayed in messages. Web bugs are also blocked if you read your emails offline. Without your explicit consent, we will not use web bugs to secretly collect personal data about you or transmit such data to third parties or marketing platforms.

On what legal basis and for what purposes are cookies used?

The legal basis for the use of technically necessary (essential) cookies is Section 25 (2) No. 2 of the TTDSG (for accessing your device), and Article 6 (1) sentence 1 lit. f GDPR (for cookie-based processing that takes place through our systems after accessing your device).

The purpose of using technically essential cookies is to make the use of websites easier for users. Some functions of our website cannot be offered without the use of cookies. For these functions, it is necessary for the browser to be recognized again even after navigating to a different page.

The user data collected through technically essential cookies is not used to create user profiles.

The use of cookies for analytics and marketing purposes serves to improve the quality of our website and its content. Through analytics cookies, we learn how the website is used and can continuously optimize our services. Processing on your device—especially those based on cookies or other identifiers (e.g., browser fingerprints, pixels)—that is not technically required for the functioning of our website is carried out only with your consent, which you can give via the cookie banner displayed when you visit our website and later modify through the cookie-consent tool we use. The legal basis for these cookie-based processes is Section 25 (1) sentence 1 TTDSG (for accessing your device) and Article 6 (1) lit. a GDPR (for processing based on cookies that occurs through our systems after accessing your device). Until you have given your consent, such cookies that are not necessary for the functioning of our website will not be set. Information on how to exercise your right to withdraw consent for cookies can be found in the respective sections where the services using third-party cookies are described.

What data is processed through the use of cookies?

Some elements of our website require the calling browser to be identified even after navigating to a different page. The data specified in the cookie settings is stored in the cookies.

This stored information is kept separate from any other data you may provide to us. In particular, the data stored in cookies is not linked to your other data.

You can also manage many online advertising cookies from companies via the U.S. website www.aboutads.info/choices/ or the EU website www.youronlinechoices.com/uk/your-ad-choices/
